Start by removing existing grass, weeds, and debris. Grade the soil so it slopes away from your home foundation for proper drainage. Loosen the top 2 to 3 inches of soil with a rake or tiller. Add topsoil if needed to level out low spots. Water the soil lightly the day before your grass arrives so it is moist but not muddy.
Wait two to three weeks after installation before the first mow. Bermuda about once a week at 1 to 1.5 inches. Zoysia every 7 to 10 days at 1.5 to 2 inches. St. Augustine about once a week at 2.5 to 4 inches. Centipede every 10 to 14 days at 1.5 to 2 inches. Never remove more than a third of the blade in one mowing.
